Tips for a Smooth Resignation

1. Prepare Beforehand:

  • Write your resignation letter and a brief handover document (job status & candidate status)
  • Print two copies of your letter (one for your manager, one for HR)
  • Review your contract so you know what your notice period is and any restrictive covenants and comms due
  • Be mentally ready for emotional or unexpected reactions
  • 2. Keep the Meeting Short & Professional:

  • Be polite but firm, say your decision is final.
  • Avoid discussing the new company name or offer details.
  • Bring a printed handover plan and resignation letter to reduce reasons for prolonging the conversation.
  • 3. Send an Email Immediately After the Meeting:

  • This provides a timestamped paper trail of your resignation.
  • 4. Don’t Sign Anything Given to You:

  • You are not required to sign additional contracts, restrictive covenants or paperwork beyond your original employment agreement. Do not hand over your LinkedIn password, you own your personal profile.
  • 5. Expect Pushback:

  • Many companies will try to delay your exit or offer counter-offers.
  • Always say that the day you resign is the start of your notice period. Don't allow "thinking time" outside of it.

  • 6. Remember Why You’re Leaving:

  • Keep your push/pull factors front of mind. Your WHY – short term and long term.
  • This is a forward step, not an escape.

  • 7. No Counter Offers:

  • Accepting one often leads to leaving within 6–12 months.
  • Trust the decision you made and the opportunity ahead.
  • Even if promises are made and things improve, it doesn’t mean they will stay that way.

    RESIGNATION MEETING SAMPLE SCRIPT

“I’ve made a clear and final decision to resign from my position. I’ve accepted an offer elsewhere and today officially marks the beginning of my notice period.

I’d prefer not to discuss the details of where I’m going or the package I’ve accepted, out of respect to both businesses. What I’d ask is that we focus on wrapping things up well and keeping everything positive from here. This has been a great place to start my career and I’m genuinely grateful for the support I’ve had here.

I’ve prepared a full handover document to make the transition as smooth as possible and I’m committed to working my notice period professionally and respectfully if that is what you would like.

I want to be upfront and say I’m not open to any counter offers, and I’d appreciate it if we didn’t go down that road. This decision has come after careful thought and consideration, and it’s based on what I believe is best for my long-term career.

I just want to end on saying thank you for everything and I wish you and the team here well for the future.”
